वैज्ञानिक नाम (Axis axis)ले चिनिने '''चित्तल''' उग्राउने खालको स्तनधारी जनावर हो । यो जनावरलाई कतै कतै थोप्ले मृग (otted deer) तथा axis deer नामले समेत चिनिन्छ । सामान्यतया चित्तलहरू श्रीलंका, नेपाल, बंगलादेश, भुटान, भारत र क्रोएशीयाको इष्ट्रीयन प्रायद्वीपको Veliki Brijunटापुका जङ्गलहरू तथा आसपासका क्षेत्रहरूमा पाइन्छन् । यसका अलावा पाकिस्तानमा समेत केही सङ्ख्यामा चित्तलहरू पाइन्छन् । It is the most common deer species in Indian forests. Its coat is reddish fawn, marked with white spots, and its underparts are white. Its antlers, which it sheds annually, are usually three-pronged and curve in a lyre shape and may extend to 75 cm (2.5 ft). It stands about 90 cm (3 ft) tall at the shoulder and masses about 85 kg (187 lb). Its lifespan is around 20–30 years.

Chital has been also spotted in Phibsoo wildlife Sanctuary in Bhutan which is the only remaining natural Sal (Shorea robusta) forests in the country.
