माँबीको पटक-पटकको आक्रमण असफल भएपछि अङ्ग्रेजहरू युद्धद्वारा नेपाली वीर गोर्खालीलाई परास्त गर्ने आशा मारे । त्यसपछि अङ्ग्रेजहरूले कूटनीति अपनाई किल्लाभित्र गएर र [[पानी]]को मुहान थुनिदिए । अङ्ग्रेजहरूको उक्त धोकापूर्ण चालले नेपालीले पानीसमेत पिउन पाएनन् । पानीको प्यासले किल्लाभित्र हाहाकार मच्चिन थाल्यो । बाहिरबाट शत्रुका तोपहरूको अग्निवर्षा जारी थियो भने भित्र सारा फौज प्यासले तड्पिरहेका थिए । त्यस्तो दर्दनाक परिस्थितिमा जीवित रहेका बाँकी वीर सेनाको हितका लागि [[बलभद्र कुँवर|बलभद्र]]ले स्वतः किल्ला छोड्नुपरेको थियो । सन् १८१४ नोभेम्बर ३० मा [[बलभद्र कुँवर|बलभद्र]]ले किल्ला छोडेर जाँदा साथमा ७० जना जति मात्र बाँकी थिए । किल्लाको स्वतः त्यागपछि मात्र अङ्ग्रेजहरूको पाइला खलङ्गा किल्लासम्म पुग्न सकेको थियो । युद्ध पश्चात् नेपालीहरूको पराक्रम र बहादुरीको प्रशंसा गर्दै अङ्ग्रेजहरूले एक युद्ध स्मारकको स्थापना गरे । उक्त स्मारकको शिलालेखमा लेखिएको छ- '''हाम्रा वीर शत्रु बलभद्र र उनका वीर गोर्खालीहरूको स्मृतिमा सम्मानोपहार''' हालको [[देहरादून]] स्थित सहस्त्रधार रोडमा पर्ने स्मारक भारतीय पुरात्तव विभागको संरक्षणमा छ। यो विश्वभरिको एक मात्र त्यस्तो उदाहरणीय स्मारक मानिएको छ जहाँ कुनै सेनाद्वारा आफ्नो शत्रु सेनाको अद्भूत वीरतालाई उल्लेख गरिएको छ । [[भारत]]को [[उत्तराखण्ड|उत्तराखण्ड राज्य]] अन्तर्गत पर्ने [[देहरादून]]को नालापानीमा पर्ने खलङ्गा किल्लाले [[नेपाल]] र नेपालीको गौरवमय इतिहास बोकेको छ ।
