अर्जेन्टिनाको राजधानी सहर ब्युनर्स आयर्समा जन्मिएका जर्ज मारियोलाई सन् १९६९मा पुजारीको रूपमा नियुक्त गरिएको थियो । उनले सन् १९७३ देखि १९७९ सम्म अर्जेन्टिनाको सोसाइटी अफ जिसस नामक संस्थाको नेतृत्व गरेका थिए । त्यसपछि सन् १९९८मा ब्युनर्स आयर्सकोआर्कबिसप हुँदै उनी सन् २००१मा पोपको चुनावमा मतदान गर्ने कार्डिनलको रूपमा चुनिए । सन् २०१३ फेब्रुअरी २८मा उनका अग्रज पोप बेनेडिक्ट सोर्हौंले राजीनामा दिएपछि पोप छनौटगर्न भ्याटिकन सिटीमा आयोजित एक गोप्य भेलाले उनलाई पोपको रूपमा चुन्यो । पोप चुनिएपछि जर्ज मारियोले प्राचिन सन्त फ्रान्सिस अफ असिसीको सम्मानमा आफ्नो नाम फ्रान्सिस प्रथमको रूपमा परिवर्तन गरे । सोसाइटी अफ जिससबाट पोप हुने प्रथम व्यक्ति पोप फ्रान्सिस, अमेरिकी मुल तथा दक्षिणी गोलार्द्धबाट पनि पहिलो पोप हुन् ।
