आठौँ शताब्दीमा जन्मेका हिन्दू धर्मका जगतगुरु आदी शंकाराचार्य द्वारा माथी उल्लेखीत स्थानहरुलाई हिन्दूहरुका चार धामको रुपमा नामांकन गरेका थिए।collated by the 8th century reformer and philosopher [[Adi Shankaracharya]], into the archetypal all-India pilgrimage circuit to the four [[cardinal point]]s of the [[Indian subcontinent]] in a bid to unify people across the region {{Citation needed|date=July 2009}}.
